7 years agoPittsburgh Pirates starting pitcher Chad Kuhl tied a career high with eight strikeouts to help his team snap a five-game losing streak on Wednesday night. The right-hander went six innings in Game 2 of a doubleheader against the Detroit Tigers, giving up just three runs, six hits and a walk. The win was Kuhl's third of the year, and he now holds a respectable 4.55 ERA in five outings. Most encouragingly, his punchouts have held steady (20.7 percent strikeout rate) after seeing an increase last year, and his walks have come down. It's still early, but Kuhl has a 6.6 percent walk rate through five outings and 27 2/3 innings, a significant improvement from his 10.6 percent mark a year ago. With a .373 batting average on balls in play against him, Kuhl should also see some better luck come his way eventually. His next start hasn't been announced yet, but it should come early next week against the Washington Nationals.--Matt Wilkes
