7 years agoNew York Jets rookie tight end Chris Herndon, who has a mix of power, elusiveness and toughness, could be a difference maker for the team at the position in 2018. He's competing with four others at the position, but the Jets really like him and believe he will rise above the pack and produce. The team is in love with him, according to people familiar with the team's affinity for Herndon. He can run after the catch and is a solid in-line blocker. “He’s all ball,” tight ends coach Jimmie Johnson said Monday. “He’s always focused on football. He’s more of a focused or serious dude. He doesn’t have a whole lot of nonsense… doesn’t want to play (around) too much. I try to lighten the mood with him every now and then, but he just loves to compete. He loves playing football. That’s good to have that type of person in the room.” Herndon's final college season was cut short by injury, but he excels in yards after the catch and could compete with Jordan Leggett for the main pass-catching role this year. He averaged 9.3 yards after the catch and forced nine missed tackles on 40 catches last year. Herndon had experience with a pro-style offense in college and should be a good fit for offensive coordinator Jeremy Bates' west coast scheme. The fourth-round pick could become a late-round pick in deeper leagues if he proves worthy of a starting job this preseason.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBaller
