3 years agoNew York Yankees right-hander Clarke Schmidt has "an excellent shot" to travel north with the club for the start of the season, according to manager Aaron Boone. The young pitcher is currently the Yankees seventh-best prospect, as per MLB Pipeline, and is putting together a strong spring. Over 9.1 innings, he's compiled a 3.86 ERA, 11 strikeouts, and a 0.86 WHIP. Schmidt appeared in the majors last season, posting a 5.68 ERA, though in just over six innings. He had a lot of success in the minors in 2021, pitching to a 2.37 ERA with 46 strikeouts across 38 innings split between three levels. The native of Georgia will likely come out of the bullpen to begin the year but could ultimately pitch himself into the rotation if someone else falters. Schmidt's not worth drafting at this point, but fantasy managers should keep an eye on the Yankees plans and possibly claim him on the waiver wire.--Spencer Seguin - RotoBaller
