7 years agoStarter Cole Hamels looked like his old self in a 6-4 win over the New York Yankees, hurling seven strong innings with four hits, two walks, and two runs surrendered while striking out seven. While he's had other strong outings this season, including a six-inning one run tilt earlier in May and an 11-strikeout performance in April, this game showed why he was once one of the best starters in baseball. He mixed his pitches, located extremely well, and dominated a Yankees lineup that has been jumping on opposing pitchers all year. All of the the damage given up was courtesy of two solo shots by Gleybar Torres and Andrew Romine, but the vaunted top of the lineup that includes Judge, Stanton, Sanchez, and Gregorius was held easily in check. Hamels has been a revelation over his last five starts with an ERA of 2.08, a batting average against of just .173, and a WHIP of 1.02 while striking out hitters at 23.3% clip. However, FIP suggests that regression could be coming, sitting at 4.73 over that same time frame. Fantasy owners may have an opportunity to sell high on the former Cy Young winner.--Sean Scampton
