Cole Irvin Making Bid For Rotation Spot
4 years agoOakland Athletics starting pitcher Cole Irvin dazzled in his last spring outing striking out 10 Dodgers in six shutout innings. The 27-year-old lefty carried a no-hitter into the sixth inning as he makes a bid for the fifth rotation spot vacated by Mike Fiers (back) who will start the season on the injured list. A's prospects A.J. Puk and Daulton Jefferies are also in the running to begin the season in the rotation. Irvin didn't pitch much in the shortened 2020 season, but posted a 5.83 ERA across 41 2/3 innings with the Phillies in 2019. If Irvin wins a spot, he's not an overly attractive fantasy potion as he has a sub-20 percent strikeout rate thus far in the Majors and never averaged more than eight K/9 in the minors. His appeal is limited to deeper AL-Only formats until he shows he can miss bats at the MLB level.
