Dellin Betances Making Slow Gains In Velocity
4 years agoNew York Mets relief pitcher Dellin Betances (shoulder, Achilles) still hasn’t reached the fastball velocity he exhibited when he was a lockdown reliever for the Yankees. Betances, who topped out at 90 mph in his Grapefruit League debut back in March, was only sitting at 92-93 mph in his first summer camp live batting practice session, according to Mets manager Luis Rojas. Despite the slow improvement, Rojas still believes Betances will be up to speed by Opening Day. Betances and Seth Lugo will serve as the Mets setup men in front of closer Edwin Diaz. Betances' effectiveness and fantasy value will hinge on whether he is fully healthy and can reproduce velocities exhibited when he was a Yankee. If he can regain his past form, Betances will have value in holds leagues. He may also be in line to grab some save opportunities if Diaz loses his grip on the closer role.
