Diamondbacks Looking For Ways To Keep J.D. Martinez
7 years agoThe Arizona Diamondbacks remain engaged in talks to re-sign free-agent outfielder J.D. Martinez, even though the Red Sox remain the clear favorite for his services. Martinez's agent, Scott Boras, recently had an in-person meeting with Arizona owner Ken Kendrick as the sides try to find common ground. With the Diamondbacks not having as much of a budget as Boston, sources suggest Arizona has broached "creative" ways to keep Martinez. Arizona would be able to offer Martinez consistent playing time in the outfield, though, something Boston can't do. The D-backs are also believed to be considering a higher average annual value and shorter deal with opt-out clauses included. Martinez slugged 45 home runs in just 119 games last year between the Tigers and Diamondbacks and is the top free-agent slugger on the market. Oh, and he also hit .303 and drove in well over 100 runs.
