4 years agoNew York Mets first baseman/outfielder Dominic Smith figured to play an integral role for the club this season once the designated hitter was announced for the National League. But through the Mets’ first seven games, Smith has compiled just seven at-bats, largely ceding way to Yoenis Cespedes as the DH. But after Smith again sat on the bench Thursday, not used in a key pinch-hitting situation, Mets manager Luis Rojas said the team was “looking definitely” at getting Smith some more at-bats in the near future. There is considerable pop in Smith’s bat, as evidenced by his 11 home runs in 177 at-bats last year. Owners will want to keep him in mind -- especially in NL-only formats -- should Cespedes’ early season struggles force Rojas to make a switch.--Jesse Borek
