7 years agoNew York Mets first baseman Dominic Smith had a tumultuous offseason that saw him start off seemingly as the favorite for the big league gig come Opening Day, to falling behind the acquired Adrian Gonzalez on the depth chart, to suffering a quadriceps injury that kept him on the shelf throughout spring training and the start of the season. Smith is aiming to prove the team should've had more faith in him. Through 37 at-bats in 10 games at Triple-A Las Vegas, Smith is slashing .297/.395/.595 with two home runs and five doubles thus far. Of course, production is often inflated in the very hitter-friendly confines of Vegas and the Pacific Coast League, but it shouldn’t be ignored either. Smith is likely to get his opportunity at some point this year, but Gonzalez is playing well enough to hold onto the job in Queens for now.--John Smith
