6 years agoNew York Mets first baseman Dominic Smith was released by the Toros del Este of the Dominican Republic winter league after just seven games due to a misunderstanding regarding his defensive role, according to his Roc Nation agency. "With the lack of play in the outfield, both parties felt it was best for Dom to come back to the U.S. to train for the upcoming 2019 season," agent Kyle Thousand said. The Mets want Smith to get more work in the outfield with Jay Bruce likely to play first base next year and No. 2 prospect Peter Alonso quickly rising. Smith hit just .133 in his seven games in the Dominican Republic and has struggled in his limited time in the majors the last two years, hitting .210/.259/.406 with 14 home runs and 37 RBI in 310 at-bats over 105 games. He won't really be on the radar of those in mixed leagues, and his playing time will certainly be in question.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBaller
