6 years agoWhen New York Mets first baseman Dominic Smith struggled in his initial call to the big leagues near the end of 2017, many chalked it up to rookie nerves and looked past it. His short time in the Majors since being called up on June 12, however, is now leading many to believe Smith is simply not very good. Making his first career start in left field, Smith finished 0-for-4 in Tuesday’s 10-8 loss to the Colorado Rockies. It was his second straight 0-for-4 effort and he’s now hitless in his last three games. In his nine games with the Mets this season, he’s slashing a pathetic .174/.208/.348 (.556 OPS). Twenty three at-bats is a tiny sample size, of course, but Smith isn’t doing himself any favors after seemingly falling out of favor with the front office. With prospect Peter Alonso breathing down his neck, Smith’s reign as the Amazins first baseman may not last very long, assuming he continues to play first base.--John Smith
