7 years agoNew York Mets first baseman prospect Dominic Smith is in the news again, and this time it’s actually good news – over the weekend he made his outfield debut with Triple-A Las Vegas. Originally penciled in to be the New York Mets first baseman in 2018, Smith seemingly fell out of favor with management who went out and acquired Adrian Gonzalez instead. Add in the lack of spring training due to injury plus the emergence of mashing prospect Peter Alonso for Double-A Binghamton, and it’s becoming clear Smith needs to do something more if he’s going to endear himself to the organization once again. With the Mets currently short on outfield depth due to various injuries, if Smith proves himself capable in that position he may find a clearer path to the Majors sooner rather than later. So far this season his bat isn’t necessarily indicative of a must-add even in the hitter-friendly PCL, though.--John Smith
