Dominic Smith Wears Golden Sombrero As Struggles Continue
6 years agoBetween his initial MLB debut in the summer of 2017 and his results since being called back up in mid-June of this season, you can’t really ask for a much worse first impression than the one New York Mets first baseman/outfielder Dominic Smith has displayed. In a 4-3 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Tuesday, Smith once again played the outfield and finished 0-for-4 with four strikeouts, wearing the golden sombrero of shame. It was the second consecutive game Smith finished 0-for-4, and he now only has one hit in his last five games. For the season, he’s slashing .227/.261/.409 (.670 OPS), and the star that had already seemed to be fading continues to diminish. It’s highly possible the Mets continue to play Smith in left field as a means to hopefully develop his bat at another position while clearing the path for their newest mashing first base prospect Peter Alonso.
