Drew Smyly Struggles Again Tuesday
5 years agoPhiladelphia Phillies starting pitcher Drew Smyly allowed four runs in 5 2/3 innings in a no-decision against the Pirates Tuesday. Smyly allowed nine hits, including two, homers as his recent struggles continued. In his first two starts after being acquired by the Phillies Smyly allowed only one run in 13 innings. Opposing offenses have been less kind to Smyly after the calendar flipped to August, however. Smyly has allowed 20 earned runs in his last 24 innings as his August ERA ballooned to 7.50. Smyly's astronomical 6.92 FIP and 11.2 percent walk rate don't suggest his recent poor performance is bad luck either. He's best left on the waiver wire in all formats.
