4 years agoNew York Mets relief pitcher Edwin Diaz pitched a scoreless ninth inning to secure the Mets 1-0 Opening Day win against the Braves on Friday. Diaz allowed only a walk, while striking out two in his one inning of work. Diaz notched his first save of the season. Earlier in July manager Luis Rojas did not commit to reliever Edwin Diaz as the Mets primary closer. Rojas instead intimated that he could use a committee including Diaz, Dellin Betances, Seth Lugo, and Jeurys Familia. While Friday's performance does not now guarantee that Diaz has the closer job all to himself, it certainly helps his cause. Diaz is looking to bounce back from a brutal 2019 in which he posted a 5.59 ERA and a 1.38 WHIP to go with seven blown saves in 33 save opportunities. Diaz projects as a top-end closer, but there remains a risk he could still share the closer role if he struggles.--Nick Ritrivi - RotoBaller
