7 years agoSeattle Mariners closer Edwin Diaz, who leads baseball with 47 saves and who has a decent shot of breaking the single-season record of 62 set in 2008 by Francisco Rodriguez, has a 40.7 percent swing-and-miss rate, which is the best among 335 relievers who have generated at least 300 swings. He has struck out 103 of the 228 batters he's faced in 60 innings with a fastball that averages 97 mph and a slider that sits around 89 mph. Diaz's slider generates a whiff rate of 55.4 percent, which ranks fourth best among relievers. Opposing hitters are batting just .107 against his slider, and he has gotten 64 strikeouts with his slider, the most in baseball. One concern would be workload, as Diaz has appeared in 60 games already. He had four saves in four straight days against the Astros recently to become the first reliever in 14 years to do so. His 24 one-run saves have tied Eric Gagne for the most in history. Since blowing a save on June 1 against the Rays, Diaz has converted 27 in a row and has allowed one run in his last 21 outings. If that isn't dominant, we don't know what is. The flamethrowing right-hander has become the best fantasy option for saves in 2018.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBaller
