3 years agoNew York Mets relief pitcher Edwin Diaz worked one inning in the Mets 2-1 loss to the Nationals on Friday, allowing one hit and striking out three batters. Diaz was called on to keep the game a one-run contest in the ninth inning before the Mets took their final (and futile) turn at-bat. Due to the Mets recent collapse, Diaz has not recorded a save since August 12 and has only two saves (in two save opportunities) in the entire month of August. On the season, Diaz owns a 3.55 ERA, a 2.32 FIP, a 1.11 WHIP, and 72 strikeouts in 50 2/3 innings pitched. He has converted 25 saves over 29 save opportunities as well. But for a hiccup in the middle of July, and a few noteworthy implosions on the mound, Diaz has still been one of the top relief pitchers in all of baseball in 2021. Unfortunately, given the Mets recent struggles, save opportunities have been hard to come by. Nonetheless, Diaz remains one of the top closing options in baseball given his strikeout potential and firm grip on the closer role, even though his save totals could be limited through the remainder of the season.--Nick Ritrivi - RotoBaller
