Elias Diaz Could Be Rockies Starting Catcher
4 years agoColorado Rockies catcher Elias Diaz has a great chance to begin the year as the Rockies starting catcher in 2021. Thomas Harding of MLB.com stated that Diaz will get the "first shot to become a regular" and that "the Rockies are projected to partner Diaz with rookie Dom Nunez" this season. Colorado didn't bring back Tony Wolters or Drew Butera,so that makes Diaz the most experienced catcher on the roster, hence making him the favorite to win the job. He put up a lackluster .223/.354/392 batting line with two home runs and nine RBI over 68 at-bats last season with the Rockies, but he registered a .268 batting average with a .727 OPS in the 15 games in which he started. The job appears to be his to lose, and while his career numbers (.248/.300/.355 with 15 home runs over 817 ABs) are nothing special, he'll be worth a late-round flyer if he becomes the everyday catcher playing in the friendly confines of Coors Field.
