Fernando Rodney Plans To Pitch For Years To Come
7 years agoMinnesota Twins relief pitcher Fernando Rodney, who will turn 44 years old this March, thinks he can remain effective for several more years. "If you can control the game, it doesn't matter how old you are," Rodney said. "Closing is the situation in the game that I feel most comfortable. I feel like I can do my job." Rodney had a 4.23 ERA and 39 saves in 45 chances while striking out 65 in 55 1/3 innings for Arizona in 2017, and his average fastball velocity of 94-95 mph over the last four seasons is a big reason for his success. He throws his nasty changeup around 40 percent of the time, and opposing batters hit only .148 with a homer against his changeup in 2017. Rodney will open the year as Minnesota's closer. He brings a wealth of experience, having pitched for eight teams over 15 seasons, but his high walk rates make him a volatile fantasy closer and one that could easily be replaced by reliever Addison Reed early in the season.
