Garrett Hampson Leading Off On Saturday
4 years agoColorado Rockies second baseman Garrett Hampson is leading off on Saturday against the Seattle Mariners in Cactus League play. This will be the fourth time this spring that the 26-year-old has led off for the Rockies this spring. While Hampson is a second baseman by trade, he's played the majority of Cactus League games in the outfield while Brendan Rodgers has taken most of the reps at 2B. Outfielder Raimel Tapia, who appears to be the favorite to bat at the top of the order in the regular season, has led off eight times to Hampson's four but it's nice to see Colorado tinker with their lineup and try to find ways to get the speedy Hampson involved. He's struggled to gain solid footing over his major league career thus far but he is 23-for-27 in stolen base attempts. Getting work in the outfield will also give him a chance to get regular at-bats this season. Hampson flashed with his counting stats in 2020 when he smacked five home runs, drove in 11 runs, and swiped six bags over 167 at-bats but he hit just .234/.287/.383. He's worth taking a late-round flyer on due to the stolen base upside and could give a high return on investment if he puts it all together for the rebuilding Rockies.
