Green Bay Looking at Conservative Options in Offensive Coordinator Search
7 years agoESPN’s Rob Demovsky has reported that the expected candidates for the vacant offensive coordinator position in Green Bay are Ben McAdoo, Joe Philbin and James Campen. All three have served under head coach Mike McCarthy in Green Bay in some manner. McAdoo was most recently the head coach of the New York Giants but was fired for, among other reasons, the disappointing performance of the Giants offense. Philbin had been the offensive coordinator in Green Bay during their Super Bowl run in 2010-2011 before leaving to be the head coach of the Miami Dolphins. He also had a short and disappointing tenure as head coach. Campen is a lower-profile option who is currently Green Bay’s offensive line coach. Green Bay’s offensive line has played admirably in recent seasons despite numerous injuries and departures. McCarthy has stated that he intends to retain play-calling duties. This list of possible offensive coordinators who all have experience working under McCarthy suggests that Green Bay is likely to retain its current scheme despite its struggles in recent years. Quarterback Aaron Rodgers can make just about any system look incredible, but this uninspired list of candidates suggests that the skill position players like receivers Jordy Nelson, Randall Cobb and whoever is playing tight end will likely continue to deal with the same schematic issues that have plagued them for the past three seasons.
