Griffin Canning Expected To Miss Start Of Season
3 years agoLos Angeles Angels starting pitcher Griffin Canning (back) had a setback with his lower back strain while throwing a bullpen session a month ago and is expected to miss the start of the regular season. The right-hander was set to compete for the sixth spot in the starting rotation after missing most of 2021 with the same injury. He's scheduled to start playing catch in around a week, but he won't throw off a mound again for four weeks. Jaime Barria and Reid Detmers are now the top candidates to take the Angels final rotation spot, although Janson Junk, Packy Naughton and Jhonathan Diaz could be in the mix as well. Canning had a 5.60 ERA and 1.48 WHIP in 14 outings (13 starts) over 62 2/3 innings last year before his back flared up.
