5 years agoPhiladelphia Phillies relief pitcher Hector Neris allowed three earned runs and only recorded one out while pitching the eighth inning Saturday. After seven dazzling innings from Zack Wheeler, manager Joe Girardi turned to Neris in the eighth as the former closer was just 2-for-5 in save opportunities this season. Neris allowed the first three batters he faced to reach base and was lifted for the newly-acquired Brandon Workman who would allow two of those inherited runners to score. Neris now sports a grotesque 11.12 ERA and appears to be behind Workman in the pecking order for saves in Philadelphia making him droppable in standard-size fantasy leagues.--Mike Schwarzenbach - RotoBaller

3 years agoHouston Astros relief pitcher Hector Neris took the loss in Monday's contest against the Boston Red Sox, allowing three runs on three hits and a walk in one inning of work. He struck out one batter. Neris has largely been excellent as a primary set-up man this year, and this is only the second time he has been scored upon in 15 appearances. This performance raises his ERA and WHIP to 2.12 and 0.71, respectively, and his five holds make him a strong option in leagues that reward that statistic.--Doug Goldring - RotoBaller

3 years agoHouston Astros reliever Hector Neris recorded the final three outs during the club's 4-0 win over the Mariners Saturday night. It was a non-save situation for the right-hander, but it might be a telling sign that manager Dusty Baker went to him in a relatively close game versus a division rival after Ryan Pressly landed on the IL earlier today. Neris has five scoreless appearances so far to his credit with his new club in 2022, and has 84 career saves under his belt to make him the most experienced ninth-inning reliever in the bullpen. The 32-year-old veteran should be scooped up in all formats that count saves since the Astros will provide him with opportunities as long as Pressly is shelved.--Riley Mrack - RotoBaller

3 years agoThe Houston Astros signed free-agent relief pitcher Hector Neris to a two-year deal worth $17 million guaranteed on Saturday, according to a source. Neris will replace right-hander Kendall Graveman, who signed a three-year, $24 million deal with the Chicago White Sox earlier this week, in Houston's bullpen. The 32-year-old right-hander had multiple stints as the Philadelphia Phillies closer in the last eight seasons, and he had a 3.63 ERA with 98 strikeouts in 74 1/3 inning in 2021. Neris ranks second in relief appearances (372) and is third in relief innings (366 1/3) since 2016, so he should at least provide the Astros with plenty of innings in a backend bullpen role while helping Ryne Stanek set up closer Ryan Pressly. Neris should have value in leagues that reward points for holds.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBaller
