4 years agoAfter hitting two home runs on August 17 against the Marlins, New York Mets first baseman Pete Alonso is now just 2-for-15 over his last six games, with no home runs, no RBI, and no extra-base hits. On Wednesday, Alonso went 0-for-3 in the Mets' 5-4 win over the Marlins. Just when it appeared Alonso was finally breaking out of a season-long slump, he is struggling again. Alonso is now hitting just .225 with five home runs and 13 RBI on the season in 123 plate appearances. Looking at his metrics, Alonso has posted a horrible .231 xBA, an 87.1 mph exit velocity, and a six-degree launch angle against the fastball so far in 2020. These are all figures significantly lower than those posted by Alonso against the fastball in 2019. His barrel rate is also down to 10.1%, a far cry from his elite 15.8% barrel rate posted in 2019. Though his metrics against the fastball would support this slow start, managers should still remain patient with Alonso and keep him active since he could break out at any moment, as shown on August 17.--Nick Ritrivi - RotoBaller
