J.D. Davis Easing Concerns At Third Base
4 years agoNew York Mets third baseman/outfielder J.D. Davis went 1-for-3 with a solo home run in Grapefruit League action against the Marlins on Tuesday. Davis also looked better in the field on Tuesday, including starting a pair of 5-4-3 double plays. Davis is now batting .250 with the one HR and two RBI in 28 at-bats this spring. His recent defensive play, combined with the possibility that his bat is finally heating up, is easing some concerns the Mets have with naming him the 2021 starting third baseman. Davis got off to a sluggish start in spring training with his bat and glove, leading some to speculate that Luis Guillorme or Jeff McNeil would take playing time away from him at third. While that possibility still exists, continued strong defensive and offensive play in the final week of spring training could mitigate such playing time risk. In what was expected to be a breakout season in 2020, Davis posted just a .247 batting average to go with six home runs and 19 RBI in 190 at-bats. Extrapolated over the course of a full 162-game season, Davis' production only equated to a 16 HR, 50 RBI campaign. With a current ADP of 217, Davis can provide managers with decent returns in the later rounds of drafts as a solid corner infield option if he maintains the starting third baseman job in Flushing for the 2021 season.
