4 years agoNew York Mets catcher James McCann went 0-for-4 with a strikeout in the Mets' 2-1 loss to the Phillies on Friday. McCann's batting average fell to .214 on the season, and he is slashing just .182/.280/.182 over his last seven games (22 at-bats). After getting off to a quick start in the first couple of weeks of the 2021 campaign, McCann, much like the rest of the Mets' offense, has fallen into a slump. McCann is coming off a solid 2020 campaign in which he posted a .289/.360/.536 slash line with seven home runs and 15 RBI. As the Mets' primary catcher hitting sixth or seventh in what should be a potent lineup, it is only a matter of time before McCann heats up at the plate. He has posted a career-high hard-hit rate of 51.2% so far in 2021, which is in the top-14% of MLB. This suggests that some of his batted balls should, presumably, start falling in. That said, managers in shallow leagues who have other options at catcher may wish to keep McCann on the bench until he starts showing signs of life at the plate. Once he gets going, McCann should serve as a solid middle-tier catcher option throughout the 2021 season.--Nick Ritrivi - RotoBaller
