James McCann Picks Up Two Hits On Friday
3 years agoNew York Mets catcher James McCann went 2-for-3 with a walk and two runs scored in the Mets 13-4 win over the Pirates on Friday. McCann has been somewhat of a disappointment at the plate overall in 2021 for the Mets. He is batting just .251/.319/.379 with seven home runs and 29 RBI over 227 at-bats in 73 games. Coming off of a 2020 campaign in which he posted a .289/.360/.536 line to go with seven home runs and 15 RBI in just 97 at-bats, his pre-season ADP of 195 reflected expectations of a 20-25 HR campaign. Despite underperforming thus far, McCann has warmed up at the plate batting .294 with a .400 on-base percentage over his last seven games, though he has not hit a homer since June 29. McCann can be utilized as a streaming option in one-catcher formats where managers have lost catchers due to injury. He won't kill ratios as a substitute backstop while he is hitting for a decent average. He also should continue to get RBI opportunities hitting in the Mets lineup which is getting hot. Expectations regarding his home run totals, though, should be held in check given his performance so far and a barrel rate and average exit velocity which are in the bottom third of the league.
