James McCann Playing First Base On Monday
3 years agoNew York Mets catcher James McCann is batting third and playing first base on Monday when the Mets face the Rockies at home. McCann's appearance at first base will be the first of his professional career. It is a peculiar decision, considering the best defensive first baseman on the roster, Dominic Smith, is playing left field on Monday. The fact that McCann is also slashing .200/.270/.238 with just one home run and eight RBI over 115 plate appearances on the season, hardly makes his bat such a necessity that the team needs get him into the lineup out of position. McCann has shown little signs of breaking out of his season-long slump and his metrics reveal that he is at the bottom of the league in xBA, xSLG, xwOBA, and barrel rate. Despite the possibility of eventually gaining first base eligibility down the road, fantasy managers can likely ignore McCann in most formats.
