6 years agoSeattle Mariners starter James Paxton shut down the Astros on Tuesday night, lasting 7 2/3 innings in the Mariners 7-1 win. Paxton (5-1) allowed nine hits but only one run as Seattle extended its division lead over Houston to two games with the series-opening win. Paxton now has lowered his ERA to 2.95 and has allowed three or fewer runs in each of his last eight starts. The big southpaw is now the unquestioned ace of the Mariners staff and now is 17-6 over his last 37 starts for the team in the past two seasons. Paxton is striking out a career-high 11 hitters per nine innings thus far this season and will carry a 1.03 WHIP into his next start.
