Jed Lowrie Still Dealing With Leg Brace Issues
4 years agoNew York Mets infielder Jed Lowrie (leg) is still sporting a large brace on his left leg that will impact his ability to play for the Mets. Lowrie has been attempting to transition from a large brace to a smaller brace since spring training in March. The smaller brace would enable Lowrie to play in games but running with the smaller brace on causes Lowrie pain. As a result, until Lowrie can transition completely from any leg brace (or until he feels comfortable with the smaller brace on), he will not be able to help the Mets. At this point, it is doubtful that Lowrie will be ready to go by Opening Day. He will most likely open the season on the injured list, with Eduardo Nunez making the Mets 30-man roster as a utility infielder in Lowrie's absence. Lowrie missed nearly all of last season with left knee and hamstring injuries. If he can eventually overcome these injuries, Lowrie will function in a utility infielder role. As a utility infielder, however, it would take an injury to Jeff McNeil and/or Amed Rosario to guarantee consistent playing time for him in 2020. As such, even if he is eventually able to play, Lowrie is nothing more than a waiver claim as bench depth in deep NL-only formats
