4 years agoSan Francisco Giants right-handed pitcher Jeff Samardzija and left-hander Drew Smyly are both in line to work three innings during a simulated game Saturday. Samardzija landed on the IL on Aug. 8 due to an impingement in his right shoulder, while Smyly has been out since Aug. 2 with a strained finger on his left hand. The first three starts of the season went sideways for Samardzija, who yielded 16 runs (15 earned) in 13 ⅔ frames; Smyly has been much more effective, having amassed 11 strikeouts in 8 ⅓ innings. How the club’s rotation will shake out when both return remains to be seen, but working a sim game is an indication that both are nearing activation.--Jesse Borek
