Jeff Wilson Jr. Could Return Around November
3 years agoSan Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan said on Wednesday that he is hopeful that running back Jeff Wilson Jr. (knee) will return in November, but that it could be earlier or later than that timeframe. Wilson is recovering from a torn meniscus and will be a welcome addition to a 49ers backfield that just lost Raheem Mostert (knee) for the season. In 2020, Wilson rushed for 600 yards and scored seven touchdowns in 12 games. He also caught 13 balls for 133 yards and three touchdowns. The Niners backfield is crowded with rookies Elijah Mitchell and Trey Sermon to go along with second-year running back JaMycal Hasty. Mitchell saw the bulk of the work with Mostert sidelined early in Week 1, but Hasty served as the third-down back and saw some goal line opportunities. Sermon was inactive, but the third-round pick is fully expected to make an impact at some point this season. To complicate matters even more, the Niners plucked running back Trenton Cannon off of waivers from the Baltimore Ravens on Wednesday. Mitchell and Sermon offer the most upside in the backfield with Mitchell being the preference at the moment, but Wilson is certain to make an impact when he returns and managers that have an IR spot available should consider stashing him.
