Jeimer Candelario Solidifying Cleanup Role
6 years agoDetroit Tigers third baseman Jeimer Candelario quietly moved into the cleanup slot during the Tigers series against the Toronto Blue Jays on June 3. Since then, he's made five more starts hitting out of that spot, including four straight. It should come as no surprise, as Candelario leads the team in home runs with 10 on the year, but it comes at the expense of veteran slugger Victor Martinez, who has moved to the fifth spot as a result. Manager Ron Gardenhire told reporters that the lineup suggestions he receives from the analytics department have V-Mart in the five-spot "every time," and with Candelario's emerging power, it doesn't seem like that's likely to change.
