Joey Lucchesi In Tight Battle For Rotation Spot
4 years agoNew York Mets manager Luis Rojas stated on Tuesday that the competition for the fifth rotation spot between David Peterson, Joey Lucchesi, and Jordan Yamamoto remains "really tight." Lucchesi, acquired by the Mets from the Padres in the offseason, struggled in limited action in 2020, going 0-1 with a 7.94 ERA in two starts and a relief outing. For Lucchesi to have fantasy value in deep mixed and NL-only leagues, he will need to beat Peterson and Yamamoto out for that final spot in a deep Mets' rotation. Managers should note that even assuming Lucchesi does win the final spot, once Noah Syndergaard (elbow) returns from the injured list sometime during the season, Lucchesi could end up in the bullpen given the Mets' depth in the rotation with Jacob deGrom, Carlos Carrasco, Marcus Stroman, Taijuan Walker, and Syndergaard. As a result, managers rostering Lucchesi should be aware that he may not hold a rotation spot for the duration of the season unless the Mets suffer an injury to another one of their starting pitchers.
