Jon Gray Optioned to Triple-A, Raimel Tapia Recalled
6 years agoRockies starting pitcher Jon Gray has been demoted to Triple-A Albuquerque. Gray has had a, dare I say, rocky start to the season. His 5.77 ERA is absolutely horrid. Even when you take in the fact that he plays half of his games at Coors, it does not justify his 5.89 away ERA which is actually higher than his home ERA. Gray has been quite the anomaly this season, but he is not pitching as bad as it may seem. No matter what the surface numbers say, his 2.77 xFIP is top 10 in the majors and his 11.64 K/9 is more than 2 strikeouts higher than his career average. Some causes for concern are his career-high home run to flyball rate and the fact that his groundballs induced are down from last season. However, the deeper issues could be mechanical or mental. Ideally, he can work on getting softer contact from hitters while in Triple-A because he certainly has no problem making them miss. This demotion should not last too long as Gray one of the best pitching arsenals in the game. In a corresponding move, Raimel Tapia has been recalled but don't expect him to see too much playing time in a crowded outfield.
