Jonathan Villar Homers On Sunday
4 years agoNew York Mets infielder/outfielder Jonathan Villar hit a three-run home run on Sunday in Grapefruit League action against the Marlins. It was Villar's first hit of spring training. Villar was signed by the Mets to a one-year deal worth $3.55 million-plus incentives earlier in the off-season. In 2020, Villar posted an unimpressive .232/.301/.292 slash line in 185 at-bats for the Marlins and Blue Jays, though his 16 stolen bases ranked second in the MLB. Villar is likely to begin the season in a super-utility bench role for the Mets. While there is speculation he may be placed in a timeshare with third baseman/outfielder J.D. Davis (with Jeff McNeil shifting between second and third base), McNeil's defensive issues at third make such a timeshare unlikely. Villar will likely be nothing more than a depth piece behind McNeil, Francisco Lindor, and, perhaps, Brandon Nimmo in centerfield in 2021 unless the Mets suffer an injury that moves Villar up on the team's depth chart.
