Jonathan Villar Signs One-Year Deal With Mets
4 years agoThe New York Mets signed infielder/outfielder Jonathan Villar to a one-year deal worth $3.55 million plus incentives on Tuesday. In 2020, Villar posted an unimpressive .232/.301/.292 slash line in 185 at-bats for the Marlins and Blue Jays, though his 16 stolen bases ranked second in the MLB behind Adalberto Mondesi. In 2019, his last full season with regular playing time, Villar posted a .274/.339/.453 slash line to go with 24 home runs, 73 RBI, and 40 SBs for the Orioles. Having played second base, shortstop, and centerfield last season, he is projected to serve in a super-utility role for the Mets in 2021, similar to infielder Luis Guillorme. As a result, this move adversely impacts Villar's 2021 fantasy value. He will likely be nothing more than a depth piece behind Jeff McNeil, Francisco Lindor, and, perhaps, Brandon Nimmo in centerfield. This move also, potentially, negatively impacts the fantasy value of J.D. Davis. In the event Villar does, instead, get a decent amount of playing time at second base, it will require McNeil to play third base more frequently, sending Davis to the bench. Managers can likely ignore Villar in mixed league formats of 12-teams or less. Additionally, managers should be cautious when deciding to roster Davis, given potential playing time concerns resulting from this signing.
