3 years agoThe Baltimore Orioles claimed utilityman Jorge Mateo off waivers Thursday from the San Diego Padres. Infielder Pat Valaika was designated for assignment in a corresponding move. Mateo had played sparingly in two seasons with the Padres, recording a .195/.235/.310 slash with two homers and six steals in 121 plate appearances. Fangraphs lists the 26-year-old speedster as the primary backup infielder for the Orioles, so he'll conceivably get more opportunities to earn his big league credentials. A former top prospect for the Oakland Athletics, Mateo has lacked plate discipline with a 31 percent strikeout rate compared to walking at a three percent clip. Despite the game-changing speed, Mateo is a tough sell as a dynasty fantasy option until he gets on base more consistently.--Andrew Le - RotoBaller
