6 years agoUpdating a previous report, Houston Astros second baseman Jose Altuve (knee) had surgery to fix a patellar avulsion fracture in his right knee, according to a source. An avulsion fracture is when a small chunk of bone attached to a tendon or ligament gets pulled away from the main part of the bone. The good news is that Altuve is expected to be fully recovered for spring training next year. The six-time All-Star and 2017 MVP initially hurt his knee in July and played hurt the rest of the way. His numbers suffered as a result, as he hit .316/.386/.451 with only 13 home runs, 61 RBI, 84 runs scored and 17 steals. The home runs and RBI were his fewest since 2014, while he hadn't come in under 30 stolen bases since his rookie season in 2011. Altuve could easily bounce back to MVP levels in 2019 with better health, and he'll remain a top-tier fantasy second baseman.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBaller
