4 years agoReports on Wednesday reveal that there is little optimism that the New York Mets and shortstop Francisco Lindor will reach a deal on a contract extension by the end of the day. The two sides are reportedly in a stalemate regarding the length of the contract extension. The Mets have offered Lindor a 10-year, $325 million deal, while Lindor seeks a 12-year, $385 million dollar contract. While the average annual salary is essentially the same, the two sides are separated by the length of the contract by two years. Opening Day is the unofficial deadline that the two sides have set to come to an agreement on the extension. If a deal is not reached by the end of Wednesday, it is possible, yet unadvisable, that Lindor plays out the 2021 campaign with no extension and leaves New York once his contract expires at the conclusion of the season. Lindor had a down year in 2020 while slashing .258/.335/.415 with just eight home runs and 27 RBI. That said, expectations are high for him in 2021 hitting in the potent Mets' lineup.
