6 years agoWith the fifth starting spot for the San Diego Padres rotation wide open, pitchers Logan Allen and Cal Quantrill were both unable to capitalize. The two youngsters allowed 13 runs combined Sunday, leaving the backend of the Friars pitching staff in question. The 21-year-old Allen and 24-year-old Quantrill entered spring training as the Padres No. 8 and 11 rated prospects, respectively, but neither ran away with the opportunity. The Padres will enter 2019 with starters Eric Lauer, Joey Lucchesi, Chris Paddack and Matt Strahm anchoring the rotation, but it’s probable manager Andy Green will mix and match the fifth starter. Both Allen and Quantrill will likely receive spot starts, while a handful of relief options in the bullpen also have starting experience. Innings limits could limit the fantasy upside of the young Padres staff, but Lucchesi, Paddack and Strahm are worth a look to start the season.--Andrew Le - RotoBaller
