4 years agoSan Diego Padres closer Mark Melancon trod thin ice to record a five-out save Wednesday against the Colorado Rockies. In Game 1 of a doubleheader, Melancon entered a precarious situation with two runners on in the sixth in a 5-2 contest. After escaping with just one inherited runner scoring, the Rockies loaded the bases in the seventh frame before Melancon induced catcher Elias Diaz to pop out and end the game. The 36-year-old fired 37 pitches without recording a strikeout, but it was enough to earn his 12th save. The veteran owns a spectacular 0.54 ERA, 0.72 WHIP and 23 percent strikeout rate through 15 appearances and has emerged as a surprise elite closer through a month-plus of the 2021 campaign.--Andrew Le - RotoBaller
