7 years agoTR Sullivan of MLB.com reports that Texas Rangers starting pitcher Martin Perez (elbow) is close to returning to action and is scheduled to pitch in a simulated game Tuesday. He'll work on fielding drills as the week goes on, and Perez reportedly said "I am ready" when asked about a potential return. This supports a previous report that the starter would be ready for opening day after it was previously expected that he would miss up to a month of the regular season returning from an elbow injury. A healthy Perez still doesn't represent the most interesting fantasy asset and won't be of value save for deeper leagues. He is what he is at this point: a mid-4.00 ERA guy who has problems giving up the long ball and offers limited strikeout upside. Only the Rangers lack of pitching talent keeps Perez in the rotation. Look elsewhere for reinforcements.--Sean Scampton
