Matt Barnes Records First Save
6 years agoBoston Red Sox relief pitcher Matt Barnes netted his first save of the 2019 season in a 7-6 victory over the Mariners on Friday evening. He needed just 12 pitches to register the save while striking out two of the three batters he faced. Barnes' opportunity came after the Sox climbed out of a 6-1 hole in the fourth inning, which was capped off when Mitch Moreland hit a pinch-hit, three-run homer in the top of the ninth to give the Red Sox the one-run advantage. There were questions heading into the season as to whether Barnes or another member of the Sox's bullpen would get save opportunities early on, but Friday night's events point to Barnes for the time being.
