7 years agoAs we all know, New York Mets starting pitcher Matt Harvey was demoted from the starting rotation to the bullpen after a disastrous start in order to make room for Jason Vargas’ 2018 debut on Saturday. On Tuesday in St. Louis, Harvey made his relief debut against the Cardinals. The numbers may not tell the full story here as they don’t look great, but Harvey seemed solid. He pitched two innings, allowing one earned run on two hits and a walk while striking out two. As usual, he alternated between looking great on one pitch, and not having any command on his fastball on the next. After two quick outs to start the fifth inning, Harvey allowed a hard-hit double to Dexter Fowler before Paul DeJong hit another. It’s well worth noting that Harvey’s velocity was at a season-high in this one though, hitting upwards of 94 mph on his fastball and 89 mph on his slider. If Harvey’s velocity remains in that range, it’s possible he finds himself back in the rotation soon.--John Smith
