6 years agoWashington Nationals starting pitcher Max Scherzer was his usual dominant self on Opening Day on Thursday, allowing just two runs on just two hits with 12 strikeouts against three walks in 7 2/3 innings. Robinson Cano’s solo home run in the first inning was the only run the Mets put on Scherzer until Matt Grace allowed an inherited runner to score in the eighth. That was enough to leave Scherzer stuck with an 0-1 start, as the Nationals were unable to solve a slightly more dominant Jacob deGrom. Scherzer looks like he’s in for another terrific season and NL Cy Young race after this season debut.--Nathaniel Green
