Mets Manager Non-Committal To Edwin Diaz At Closer
4 years agoNew York Mets manager Luis Rojas did not commit to reliever Edwin Diaz as the Mets closer on Sunday when asked about the Mets ninth inning bullpen situation. Rojas, instead, mentioned Diaz, Dellin Betances, Seth Lugo, and Jeurys Familia in the context of a possible closer-by-committee. This is a situation the bears monitoring as we approach the late-July season opener. Diaz had a disastrous 2019 in which he posted a 5.59 ERA and a 1.38 WHIP to go with seven blown saves in 33 save opportunities. Diaz is considered a prime bounce-back candidate coming into 2020, because of peripherals that did not support his poor 2019 numbers. That said, Diaz will be on a very short leash this season with only 60 games to play and Betances, Lugo, and Familia all looming. At this point, Diaz still projects as a top-end closer on a competing team, but owners should temper expectations. With this news, there is a real risk that Diaz will either share the closer role or, if he struggles, be quickly removed from the role.
