4 years agoOn Sunday, following New York Mets' relief pitcher Edwin Diaz's fourth blown save of the season in six attempts, manager Luis Rojas stated that the Mets still trust him because he can "get big strikeouts and close games for us." Despite a solid ERA of 2.77 and a stellar strikeout rate, Diaz has proven terribly inconsistent and, contrary to Rojas' comments, incapable of performing in the closer role. Unfortunately, the Mets have very few options in the bullpen now that Seth Lugo has been moved to the starting rotation. Between Brad Brach, Justin Wilson, Dellin Betances (lat) and Jeurys Familia, Diaz may, sadly, still be the best option for the Mets at closer. Given the Mets' propensity for insanity, in other words, doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result, managers in need of saves should continue to hold Diaz since the Mets seem committed to him. Diaz will certainly help managers with strikeouts and in the ERA department. He may even muster up an occasional save sprinkled among his horrible walk rate and cataclysmic meltdowns.--Nick Ritrivi - RotoBaller
