Mickey Moniak Competing For Roster Spot
3 years agoWith Philadelphia Phillies outfielder Odubel Herrera (oblique) to begin the season on the injured list, Mickey Moniak has rejoined the competition for an Opening Day roster spot. Moniak hit a game-tying home run in Grapefruit League action on Thursday against the Pittsburgh Pirates and could be battling Adam Haseley for the lefty side of a center field platoon with Matt Vierling early on this season. "Great swing. We really like the little adjustments that he's made. He's gotten closer to the plate, he's not crossing over now. We think it's going to pay big dividends," manager Joe Girardi said. The former first overall pick has struggled in his first 55 big-league plate appearances (.128 average, one homer, 16 strikeouts), but he could be worth a look in NL-only leagues to open the season if he wins a roster spot.
