6 years agoChicago Cubs reliever Mike Montgomery (finger) left Monday's game against the Astros without throwing a pitch, but he is optimistic that he will be available for Game 2 of the series on Tuesday. The 29-year-old lefty was summoned to replace starter Cole Hamels, who was rocked for six runs, in the bottom of the fifth. He was officially ruled out due to discomfort in his left middle finger. Left-hander Kyle Ryan ultimately pitched the fifth and some of the sixth inning. While Montgomery is not expected to miss much time, if any at all, the fifth-year pro will likely be re-evaluated at the ballpark on Tuesday. Montgomery is a key member of the bullpen and has pitched well over the last four weeks, posting a 1-0 record with a 1.64 ERA, .231 average against (.290 BABIP) and 1.18 WHIP.--Daniel Benjamin
